"[The census] furnish no basis for taxation and nothing is gained, in that respect, by withholding information. The Census has nothing to do with Taxes. It is downright stupidity in any one to suppose that by refusing to give the full products of his farm he will thereby lessen his taxes. We know that this was the opinion of many farmers, but we hope for the credit of Franklin County that no one can be found so ignorant at this day."
