The Vindicator criticizes the Staunton Spectator for lauding the election of a "Black Republican" to Speaker of the House of Representatives. Even though the new speaker, Mr. Pennington, is a former friend of Henry Clay, the Vindicator still rejects his election because the Republican party is dedicated to the "final and speedy overthrow of Southern rights."

Want of time prevented our noticing in our last, the splendid vocal and instrumental entertainment given by the Musical Association under the superintendence of Prof. Turner and Mr. Alby on Thursday night of last week. We feel confident in saying that the large audience in attendance were highly gratified with the entertainment, and will be ever ready to favor the performers with the presence when called upon.
