Breckinridge papers, such as the Richmond Enquirer, insist that such fusion would be a violation of principle. The Breckinridge supporters would agree to a fusion only if the Douglas wing was willing to reject its ticket and recant its slanders of disunion against the Breckinridge wing. The Richmond Examiner opposes the fusion as well. Douglas papers have mostly been silent, but some individual Douglas men have spoken out against the proposal.
